Trans Pride builds gender understanding and respect
by Susan Davis
Akron-Trans Pride of Northeast Ohio is now into its fifth year, meeting at the Akron Pride Center at 7 pm on the third Friday of every month.
From the beginning, Trans Pride has maintained a commitment to building better gender understanding and respect within the total lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, as well as the greater diverse community of Northeast Ohio.
From the first meeting the group has strived to build an understanding of the gender ambiguity challenging all of us. Whether we are a woman or a man dealing with gender ambiguity, a cross dresser expressing an "other gender side" or a person truly in need of a full gender transition, we all have a common challenge needing better understanding and mutual respect.
The group does not maintain a membership role or collect dues. All women and men, all parents and friends, all LGBT and supportive people are welcome. No reservations are required, no special dress code; just come with an open mind and a sincere inter-
est in promoting gender understanding. Meetings start with a potluck dinner followed by a moderated program. The diverse programs delve into gender related issues ranging from ambiguous gender identities to effects of gender roles on sexual activity, and much more. The programs involve outside speakers, such as plastic surgeons, psychologists, clergy, etc., as well as moderated open discussions on specific gender related subjects. All programs involve Q & A periods moderated to involve all present into any discussions.
Do come and join Trans Pride for fun and better gender understanding. For further information e-mail Susan Davis at susie@nls.net or phone 330-923-3413. Or, request to have your e-mail address added to the
Trans Pride group list at transprideofneo@yahoogroups.com.
The Akron Pride Center is located at 71 North Adams St. in Akron, and can be reached at 330-253-2220 or online at www.akronpridecenter.org.

Connection gives support for LGBT parents and kids
by Jaime Bishop
Cleveland-The Family Connection is a social support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered parents and their children in the Northeast Ohio area. The group welcomes alternative families, as well as "wanna-bes," those who are exploring, or are in the process of, pursuing parenthood. Our children come to us through adoption, fostering and biology. Many of our families are multi-racial, headed by two parents, one parent, stepparents and grandparents.
The Family Connection was reborn in 1996 following a brief sabbatical, and was formerly a support group for gay fathers in the Akron area: Through the years, the group's. membership has grown, a name was adopted, and a logo was created. The group has marched in six consecutive Pride parades pushing strollers, pulling wagons and carrying babies on our backs.
Social in nature, the group provides conversation, amusement and occasional advice
and suggestions from parents who have experienced many different paths within their families. We share many common parental concerns as well as those unique to our families.
The Family Connection meets once a month for family gatherings and approximately once every other month for "Parents Night Only." Although many of the group's families live in the Akron, Kent and Stow areas, a Family Connection Cleveland group will be forming this summer. There is a monthly newsletter that keeps the group informed of events and contact information.
The Family Connection strongly believes that "Love is all it takes to make a family” and welcomes anyone interested in more information or participation. Contact the group at familyconnectionohio@yahoo.com, or call Jaime Bishop at 216-556-5692.
Jaime Bishop is a licensed psychotherapist and a member of Family Connection Cleveland.
